History

Warndon Chess Club was established in 2026 by seven former members of Worcester City Chess Club, following the enduring success of the historic City chess organisation, located near Barbourne.

The City club is recognised as one of the top 10 oldest continuously operating chess clubs in the world, with records held at the club dating back to 1837. These records suggest that its origins go back even further, reflecting a rich and long-standing tradition of chess in the area.

Today, the City club boasts a membership of c50 players and is supported by strong finances. Its sustained activity and reputation for fostering chess talent have made it an inspiration for the local chess community. It is this ‘proof of concept’ that provides the basis for Warndon Chess Club’s viability.

The success and popularity of this historic club directly inspired the creation of Warndon Chess Club, providing an additional hub for chess in the city. We aim to further expand opportunities for players to compete, socialise, and develop their skills, helping to maintain Worcester’s standing as a historic and active centre for chess.
